TPU FILAMENT (95A)
TPU Filament is a fun flexible plastic to print with once you have mastered PLA and PETG. TPU can be challenging and it is generally used by experienced printers. Nozzle clogging, oozing, under extrusion and stringy prints are not uncommon.
Printing Tips for TPU Filament
Before you print
Firstly you need to understand if your model needs withstand rough treatment (mechanical toughness) or needs to be flexible. Changing a couple things in your slicer settings will set the desired outcome. A greater infill percentage and more perimeters (walls) will give your model more mechanical resistance. Want flexibility? Then do the opposite. Less infill percentage, perimeters and top/bottom layers.
Idler Gear
Loosen the idler gear so there is only light pressure on the filament. This will prevent the gear grabbing the soft filament and twisting it around causing an entangled mess (been here, done that).
Turtle Printing Speed
Slow down your print. Don't rush things. We recommend the turtle speed for TPU Flexible Filament of 20mm/s. This takes the pressure off your gears.
Dry Your Filament
Use dry filament. TPU Filament is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture. We recommend a drying temp of 40°C for 5 hours.
Retraction Settings
Depending on your slicer, the default tpu profile might have retractions disabled. We recommend keeping that setting. Aggressive retractions can lead to a world of pain with the tpu softening and jamming in your gear drive. Start at nothing and if you need to adjust then go by small increments.
Clean Print Surface
At Print Solid we use the textured powder coated sheet. The textured sheet simply doesn't need any adhesion breaks like glue or painters tape. Depending how careful you are to not touch the sheet you may have to first clean it thoroughly with dish soap and warm water. Wipe it down with paper towel. Then to ensure a complete clean, spray the sheet with 90% IPA and wipe vigorously with a fresh piece of paper towel. Return the sheet to the heatbed making sure you do not touch the printing surface. Do not use cleaning wipes as they may leave residual chemical on the sheet which will reduce adhesion.
